ISRAEL
STRIKES IRAN’s NUCLEAR FACILITIES
1. Operation & Strategic Context
Israel's
Operation Rising Lion involved 200+ Israeli fighter jets targeting Iran’s
nuclear and military infrastructure under the Begin Doctrine, a strategic
policy first applied in 1981 during the Osirak reactor strike, asserting
Israel’s right to preemptively destroy hostile nuclear threats.
Intelligence
revealed Iran had enriched 400 kg of uranium to 60% purity, enough for 9–15
nuclear warheads within days.
2. Execution & Mossad’s Role
The
IDF executed 5 airstrike waves, deploying over 330 precision munitions on 100+
targets. Simultaneously, Mossad carried out covert sabotage , smuggling
weapons, establishing a drone base near Tehran, and disabling radars, to
support air superiority .
3. Weapons & Quantities
Israeli
forces used deep-penetration bunker busters, air-to-ground missiles (including
Rampage), delivered stealthily via F-35I Adir fighters. Over 330 munitions were
deployed in the initial strikes.
4. Key Targets & Significance
Struck
targets include Natanz, and facilities at Khondab and Khorramabad; in Tehran,
the IRGC HQ, missile factories, and homes of senior commanders and nuclear
scientists were hit.
Casualties:
IRGC commander Hossein Salami, Armed Forces Chief Gen. Mohammad Bagheri,
Gholamali Rashid, plus 6–10 nuclear scientists, including Abbasi and Tehranchi
5. Defence Gaps Revealed
Iran’s
outdated air defences, weak coordination, and radar vulnerabilities were
exposed. Mossad’s sabotage was crucial in disabling air-defence systems,
enabling deep strikes into Tehran and other hardened facilities.
6. Past Key Israeli Strikes
History
includes assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists, the 2010 Stuxnet
cyber-attack on Natanz, and airstrikes on Iranian proxies in Syria. Rising Lion
marks the biggest direct strike since the Iran–Iraq War.
7. Iran’s Immediate Response
Iran
admitted the deaths of Salami, Bagheri, and scientists; launched 100 drones
toward Israel (intercepted), declared national mourning, and pledged “bitter,
painful” retaliation.
8. Regional Impacts
The
operation sparked a 7–9% surge in oil prices (Brent reaching ~$75–78 per
barrel), increased stock market volatility (Asian markets declined by ~1–1.5%),
and regional airspace closures. Leaders globally warned of war risk.
9. Risks to Pakistan
The
oil-price surge risks economic strain, trade disruptions via Gulf routes, and a
more complex security environment vis-à-vis Iran, India, and Gulf states.
