WELCOME TO HELL: Mardan reaches 50°C, The Heatwave burned through our skins

By Qazi Wajdan, Student of Biotechnology Department at University of Malakand.

This is not normal. This is the kind of heat you see in deserts, not cities filled with children, workers, students and families.

Today, as I rode on my motorcycle towards my uncle’s house, the wind slapped my skin. My face felt like it was being cooked in an oven, my feet rotted inside my slippers and my mobile accessories started smelling like they were melted.

This is not summer, this is hell unleashed on us in Mardan. It feels like the Day of Judgment is upon us.

The southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan was predicted to record some of the most extreme conditions with temperature rising up to 49°C, these are observed mostly in North America’s Death Valley, but this temperature in Mardan has reached more than that. This is possibly the highest temperature recorded this summer in KPK.

Roads are deserted in broad day light. Only the desperate people dare to step out. There is skin irritation, dehydration, dizziness and headaches are common daily experiences.

“No fan, no weather, no electricity. Just fire in the air and hell on earth”

This heat wave is affecting people, they are suffering from this. Daily wage workers are fainting on site, students returning home sunburnt and mentally drained and elderly and infants are at a severe risk of heat stroke. I felt like I have just a short time to live and this heat is going to take my life.

We must take the blame on ourselves because we all did this to Mardan. Deforestation, no tree planting and burning garbage everywhere. We all do this to get rid of things because we want everything quickly through shortcuts and now we all are paying the price for it.

I urge the development authorities of Mardan to take precautionary measures against it, raise awareness among people regarding hydration and heatstroke. A tree planting campaign should be started and urban cooling strategies should be implemented.

This is because the law makers of our country are sitting in air conditioned rooms, drive in air conditioned cars and there every step is air conditioned. They don’t realize what happening here is; they just hear it and think that this is normal because they have never been through these things. As responsible citizens, it is our job to do best for our country or any place we are living in. this is our home, this belongs to us and we must do our best for our future generations. The politicians don’t care about us, we as a nation should stand up.

WE ARE NOT JUST FEELING HEAT, WE ARE PAYING THE PRICE FOR IGNORING IT.

  2. Raise of temperature is due to climate change and climate change are due to us we should take action on this as a nation to over come this effect

  3. I would have to go against the idea of government being responsible for it because it's global warming and temperature across the globe is reaching heights so for blaming the government I don't think that's appropriate
